What is the SK2 file format?

SK2 is the native vector graphics format of the sK1 open-source illustration application. It stores resolution-independent vector artwork with support for CMYK color, spot colors, and professional prepress features.

Advantages

The SK2 file format offers several advantages that make it suitable for common use cases.

  • Native CMYK and spot color support uncommon in free vector editors;
  • ICC color profile support;
  • Open source format with published specification;
  • Cross-platform support via sK1 and UniConvertor;
  • Layer support;
  • Suitable for professional print workflows

Limitations

The SK2 file format has certain limitations that may affect its use in specific scenarios.

  • No support in mainstream commercial DTP software without conversion;
  • Limited online resources and community compared to dominant formats;
  • Binary structure makes manual inspection difficult

Compatibility

SK2 vector files are supported by a wide range of design and graphics applications.

  • Browser support: No
  • Mobile support: No
  • Streaming support: No

Security considerations

SK2 is a binary format with no scripting support; security risk is minimal. Malformed files may cause application crashes in sK1; using up-to-date versions is recommended.

SK2 is the native binary document format of sK1, a free and open-source vector graphics editor developed by the sK1 Project as a cross-platform alternative to CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator. The format stores resolution-independent vector objects including paths, shapes, text, and embedded bitmaps, along with document metadata, color profiles, and page layout information. SK2 succeeds the older SKP format used by sK1 0.9.x and is designed around a compressed binary structure optimized for fast load and save operations. One of SK2's distinguishing features is its strong support for professional print production: it natively handles CMYK color spaces, ICC color profiles, and spot colors — capabilities that many free vector editors lack. The sK1 application and its companion library UniConvertor are widely used in open-source prepress pipelines for converting between vector formats such as CDR, AI, EPS, PDF, and SVG. SK2 files are primarily used by designers working in Linux-based and open-source print production environments.
