Advantages

The AVIF file format offers several advantages that make it suitable for common use cases.

  • Excellent compression efficiency;
  • Supports HDR and wide color gamut;
  • Supports 10/12-bit color;
  • Alpha transparency;
  • Can be lossless;
  • Can store animations

Limitations

The AVIF file format has certain limitations that may affect its use in specific scenarios.

  • Best results often require more CPU time for encoding;
  • Compatibility may vary across legacy apps and platforms

Compatibility

AVIF images are widely supported and can be viewed on most devices and platforms.

  • Browser support: Yes
  • Mobile support: Yes

Security considerations

When processed by vulnerable or outdated image decoding libraries, specially crafted AVIF files may trigger memory errors, denial-of-service conditions, or decoding failures. Use up-to-date decoders and validate untrusted input files.

Open standard (AV1-based)

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format built on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) container and the AV1 codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It can store images in both lossy and lossless modes and often achieves noticeably smaller file sizes than JPEG or PNG at comparable visual quality. AVIF supports advanced features such as HDR, wide color gamut, 10/12-bit color depth, ICC profiles, EXIF/XMP metadata, and an alpha channel; it can also store animated image sequences. The trade-off is typically higher encoding complexity and, on older devices, heavier decoding workloads compared to legacy formats.
